Fox News Bias Example

  1. This is a pretty funny video and raises a few interesting points. If you watched it once without really paying much attention, you may just listen to the newsreader and then think that the area was a tight spot for the election. This leads into critical literacy as regardless of the position or the power a person has, an opinion is an opinion.

    When I was in Primary School, we used to watch "Behind The News" on ABC which has stuck with me as being a fantastic way that we learnt about being critical of the news and evaluating the sources:

    Looking at the resources on the site, there are news items on the carbon tax, the royal wedding, asthma and badminton as well as teacher resources to build lessons on each episode that is shown.

  2. Exactly!! Its very amusing! I do remember BTN, we used to create mini-news broadcasts in year 7 based upon the structure of BTN to evaluate the news. I had actually forgotten about that, so thank you, it is a great source to teach students critical literacy skills!

  3. I really enjoyed the video Lexie. At about the halfway point, I was thinking 'are there just a load of people off camera we can't see who are voting for McCain?'. It also reminds me of when we were living abroad and the only English-speaking news channel we had access to was CNN. It was very difficult to get any world news if it wasn't affecting the U.S.

    In terms of critical literacy, I think one of the skills students need to be taught is not just being critical about the information being presented but to be aware that there may be lots of information actually missing.

  4. You are absolutely correct! I think that teaching students to be critically literate also involves teaching them to be aware and acknowledge the information which may be missing.

  5. Lexie, this is a nice example of what you said in the comments thread on your last post - it's important to get students to think about what's NOT being said as much as what IS being said!!
